GOELZER INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT DONATES 35,000 MEALS TO GLEANERS FOOD BANK AT
FIFTH ANNUAL COLTS TAILGATE EVENT
Tailgate Celebration Held at NK Hurst Bean Field on November 14th Prior to Colts vs. Bengals Game
Since 2006, Goelzer Investments has donated over 135,000 meals to Hoosiers in Need
With the increasing number of Hoosiers in need of food assistance, Goelzer Investment Management is proud to host their fifth annual Colts Tailgate celebration on Sunday, November 14, 2010 at NK Hurst Bean Field and donate 35,000 meals to Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana. The Indianapolis investment company is graciously donating over three skids of NK Hurst beans to Gleaners Food Bank. The bean donation will generate 35,000 meals for needy people in Indianapolis and help kick off the holiday season. The annual event is being held from 11:00 a.m. to 1 p.m. at NK Hurst Bean Field parking lot, located directly across from the new Lucas Oil Stadium.
2010 is the fifth year the Indianapolis investment company has donated meals to Gleaners Food Bank to kick off the winter months. In total, Goelzer Investment Management has donated 135,000 meals to Hoosiers in need. This is an especially important time as the number of Hoosiers living in poverty has increased by over 50% since 2000.
To encourage Colts fans to make a donation to Gleaners, Goelzer Investment Management and Moe’s Southwest Grill have teamed up and will provide a $5 Moe’s Bucks voucher to anyone who donates to Gleaners. Simply stop by NK Hurst Bean field prior to the Colts vs. Bengals game to drop off your Gleaners donation and pick up your Moe Bucks! The $5 Moe bucks can be redeemed on any food or beverage item at the two Indianapolis Moe’s Southwest Grill restaurants (no expiration on vouchers).
Why beans?? A bean dinner is high in complex carbohydrates, protein and dietary fiber, helping to satisfy hunger because it is absorbed slowly. Beans are also high in calcium, iron, folate, and potassium.
“The most challenging economy since the Great Depression has left many Hoosier families struggling to put food on their tables,” says Carrie Petty, Chair of the Gleaners Food Bank Board of Directors, 2010-2012. “The new estimates from the U. S. Census Bureau show that Indiana’s poverty rate has jumped to 14.4 percent from 13.0 percent. One out of every five Hoosier kids is living in poverty. When poverty goes up, so does hunger. We’ve never had so many of our neighbors needing emergency food assistance.”
According to Petty, “Community partnerships are a vital part of Gleaners’ ability to provide food for the 161,000 individuals who depend on our local emergency hunger relief network. We are so grateful for the continued support of Goelzer Investment Management. The annual tailgate event is a fun way for people to get involved and help our neighbors in need.”
With many families being challenged with difficult financial times, we recognize the staggering increase of hungry families in our community,” says Greg Goelzer, CEO of Goelzer Investment Management. “Since we launched the Tailgate event in 2006, we are proud to have fed over 135,000 meals to the homeless.”
Gleaners Food Bank works with charities in Indiana to help feed people in need. Over 137,000 Hoosiers are not hungry today because Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana provides food and critical groceries to hunger relief charities. Gleaners, a member of Feeding America (formerly America’s Second Harvest), was established in 1980. Since then the food bank has distributed over 225 million pounds of food and critical grocery products to nearly 400 hunger relief charities serving Hoosiers in need in 20 central Indiana counties. There are 205,330 Hoosiers who need food assistance on a weekly basis, with almost 37% of those people under the age of 18. By pairing up with Goelzer Investment Management and NK Hurst Beans, Gleaners is reaching a remarkable number of people at one time. To learn more, log onto www.gleaners.org or www.goelzerinc.com.
